Meet Julia Stridh – a stylist and set designer with a keen eye for both fashion and interiors. With her characteristic sense of color and form, she’s become one of our top sources of inspiration for renovations. Together with her family, Julia has spent over a year tackling a comprehensive renovation of a 1925 house in Bromma. From floor to ceiling, room by room, this home is crafted with a thoughtful blend of original details and new design that feels both timeless and personal.
Throughout the renovation, Julia has used her home as a canvas, experimenting with colors, textures, and materials that reflect both her personal style and the historical character of the house. With a modern yet playful approach, she combines bold shades with soft textiles and carefully chosen details to create an interior that feels alive and warm.
The kitchen is often described as the heart of the home, and in Julia’s case, this couldn’t be truer. Designed as a central gathering spot, it’s where friends and family come together to enjoy food, wine, and each other’s company. Julia has mixed materials and styles to achieve her own perfect balance – stainless steel countertops, wooden floors, painted cabinets, and stone elements create a unique, personal space.
One of the standout features in Julia’s kitchen is the built-in bench, with its softly rounded shape and bold color palette, which has become a signature of her design style. Covered in a classic striped fabric that contrasts beautifully with the house’s older architecture, the bench has become a natural gathering point for family breakfasts and casual moments.
For Julia, textiles have been as important as any other material choice in the kitchen. Strong colors are balanced by neutral curtains in soft off-white tones. In the kitchen’s cooking area, she’s chosen a Roman shade in a woven linen, while in the social dining area, the same textile reappears as full-length curtains. To create a warm and inviting ambiance, Julia has layered curtains on black rods, adding a subtle yet impactful depth to the space. The woven off-white linen is paired with sheer linen curtains in the same hue, and a gentle drape grounds the look, adding sophistication. The red accents in the built-in bench are echoed in the dining table, also custom-designed by Julia, surrounded by warm-toned wooden chairs.
From the kitchen, we follow the striking red staircase that winds up to the upper floor, where the family’s bedrooms are located. The bold color of the staircase serves as a visual guide throughout the home, and once we reach the top, our attention is drawn to the guest room, where sunlight filters softly through heavy linen curtains, filling the room with a warm, gentle glow.
The yellow tones from the lower floor reappear here, with trim details painted in a citrusy shade that both complements and contrasts with the yellow walls. The curtains, elegantly draped with black tiebacks, bring weight to the space and create an almost regal look. Asian influences add a unique touch to the room, with a beautifully crafted rattan chair, a rice paper ceiling lamp that casts a soft light, and a small tassel discreetly hanging from the door handle. On the floor stands a vintage sewing box Julia sourced, serving as both decor and functional storage.
Julia’s two children share a cozy and playful bedroom where curtains set the tone for the entire space. Full-length curtains and a wide valance create a canopy-like effect, giving the room a hidden, tent-like feel. The two identical bed setups on opposite sides of the room add a sense of symmetry, making it an ideal spot for the siblings to share both sleep and play areas.
The walls are painted in a soft sky-blue shade, complementing the textiles that give the room its unique character. In addition to the decorative canopy curtains that add a cozy atmosphere, the window features a Roman shade with a wave detail. Here too, Julia’s love for bold contrasts is evident, as she combines woven off-white linen with a terracotta wave detail.
After a day spent in Julia’s home, we leave inspired by her use of color and with a newfound appreciation for how contrasts can harmonize with neutral curtains to create a balanced look.
